How to use this tool
- Add your image. Drag it into the box or tap Choose Images. The 50 KB target is already set.
- Click Compress. The tool finds the highest quality that fits, and reduces the dimensions if it needs to.
- Check and download. Open the preview to see how it looks, then save it.
What will a 50 KB image look like?
50 KB doesn't leave much room, so results depend on what's in the picture and how large it needs to appear. Here's what to expect:
| Type of image | Result at 50 KB |
|---|---|
| Head-and-shoulders portrait | Usually looks good, as it's fine for small on-screen display |
| Simple graphic or logo | Usually looks very good |
| Landscape or busy scene | Noticeably softer, as fine detail takes up a lot of space |
| Photo of a document | Readable if tightly cropped, but small print can suffer |
Tips for fitting under 50 KB
Remove the empty space
This makes the biggest difference. For a profile photo, crop closely around the face so that the 50 KB isn't spent on background.
Use a plain background if you can
Busy backgrounds like trees or patterned walls take a surprising amount of space. A photo taken against a plain wall compresses much better and looks sharper at the same file size.
Save as JPG
PNG photos struggle to reach 50 KB without shrinking a lot. Picking JPG under Save as normally gives you a larger, clearer picture, unless you need a transparent background.
If the form rejects your file
Forms sometimes check more than the file size. Look for rules about the file type (often JPG only), pixel dimensions or a minimum size. If there's a minimum, make sure the result isn't below it. The tool always shows you the final size. For exact dimensions, use Resize Image before compressing.
Have a little more room? 100 KB gives noticeably better quality. Otherwise, try 20 KB for very strict limits.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a picture 50 KB on my phone?
Open this page in your phone's browser, tap Choose Images, select your photo and tap Compress. No app is needed, and the photo stays on your phone.
Is 50 KB good enough for a passport or ID photo?
It depends on the rules of the organization asking for it, so check their requirements for size and dimensions. For US passport or visa photos, use our 2x2 Passport Photo tool, which is set up for those rules.
Why does my 50 KB image look blurry?
The image probably has lots of fine detail, or a lot of space around the subject. Crop it closer and save as JPG, or use a larger limit if the form allows it.
Are my images stored anywhere?
No. Compression happens in your browser, and your images are never uploaded.
