PDF to PNG or PDF to JPG?
Most PDFs are made up of text, tables and diagrams, and that's where PNG shines: it keeps lettering and thin lines perfectly crisp, with no fuzzy edges. Choose PDF to JPG instead if your pages are mainly photos, like a brochure or a scanned album. The files will be much smaller and look just as good.
Which resolution do I need?
| Setting | US Letter page becomes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Low · 72 DPI | 612 × 792 px | Small previews and thumbnails |
| Medium · 150 DPI | 1275 × 1650 px | Screens, slides, websites and documents |
| High · 300 DPI | 2550 × 3300 px | Printing, or zooming in on small details |
Higher resolutions make much bigger files and take longer, especially on phones. Start with Medium, then go up only if you need to.
Things to know
- Pages have a white background. Each page is saved as you'd see it on paper, so the PNG isn't transparent, even though PNG supports transparency.
- Text becomes part of the picture. You won't be able to select or edit the words in the image.
- Password-protected PDFs won't open. You'd need to remove the password in a PDF reader first.
To turn images back into a document, use PNG to PDF.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert just one page of a PDF to PNG?
Choose Pages, then type the page number. For example, enter 3 for just the third page, or 1-3, 5 for several pages.
What resolution should I use for PDF to PNG?
150 DPI suits screens and documents. Use 300 DPI for printing or when you need to zoom in on small details.
Why is my PNG not transparent?
Pages are rendered as they would look on paper, with a white background, so the resulting PNG has no transparent areas.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Pages are rendered inside your browser, which makes this safe to use for private documents.
